According to a 2022 scientific study conducted by Valisure, approximately 70% of the dry
shampoos tested contained the harmful chemical benzene.
It is so critical for us to stay informed when it comes to the toxic chemicals we are consuming
and absorbing in our bodies. If you are one of many people who use dry shampoo often, you
might be wondering how this recent recall may affect you. Recent studies show several popular
brands of dry shampoo that contain large amounts of Benzene. Benzene is a known carcinogen
that can cause leukemia and other types of blood cancers.
What is Benzene?
Benzene is a colorless or light-yellow liquid when at room temperature. It is a natural component
of crude oil. Although Benzene is an organic chemical that naturally occurs in the environment,
from erupting volcanoes, smoke from forest fires, and links have also been found in plants and
animals. The problem lies in over exposure to this cancer causing chemical, although experts
have stated that there’s really no safe exposure to benzene and butane…Research has
concluded that there are over 170 times the FDA approved amount of benzene and butane in
the dry shampoos that have been recalled.
The danger in using dry shampoos that contain benzene, is that you spray them near your face
and generally in enclosed spaces like your bathroom, making your exposure stronger than that
of second hand smoke in a bar.We may not be able to control environmental exposure, but you
can change your beauty regime by replacing your dry shampoo with an alternative brand. It is
important for a healthy lifestyle to try and eliminate potentially harmful carcinogens.
Devil in Disguise: Just because you see it on store shelves doesn’t make it safe.
Unfortunately some of your favorite brands like Amika, Batiste, Cake, CHI, Drybar Redken,
Dove, Tresemme, Pantene along with many others reportedly contained elevated levels of
benzene in their dry shampoos. These brands are still being sold and found in store shelves. If
you use dry shampoo it is imperative to read the ingredients before you buy. It is not as simple
as searching for the word Benzene listed in the ingredients, be on the lookout for these
camouflaged terms as well: aniline, phenol, 1,3,5-cyclohexatriene, toluene, xylene.
Legal Options
If you have used a product containing high levels of benzene in your dry shampoo or deodorant
and have suffered irreversible damage as a result of using this product, you may have a legal
claim against the company, you might also be eligible for compensation that will assist in
overcoming medical challenges etc. There are some law firms in New Jersey and Pennsylvania that offer free consultations for individuals that use dry shampoo and other products containing benzene.
